As we begin our 2009 Campaign for the Episcopal Charities Fund, we face rather harsh economic times. The situation compels us to examine our priorities, while having to grope our way through the thick fog of insecurity. But what do the less fortunate among us -- the poor, the hungry, the homeless, the lonely, the bereaved, the foreigner, the elderly, the underinsured and unemployed -- see amid their losses, changes, and struggles? Will they see hope or despair? Your gifts provide a Hope that tomorrow they will overcome, that they can catch a glimpse of joy in their strife.
We face a time when our faith -- what we believe and profess -- is seriously tested. Yes, it is our Christian imperative to serve those most vulnerable among us. And with God’s help, we can give expression to the love that He has placed within our hearts, in the ways that Jesus showed us -- by loving our neighbor. Not because it is easy or convenient – but because we would want others to have compassion and choose to treat us likewise.
Despite the strains and fears imposed by a troubling economy, we trust that by God’s grace, you can joyfully support the work of Episcopal Charities this year. In 2009, the Fund will distribute nearly $500,000 in grants to help people whose burdens and worries are much greater than our own. The challenge goal for St. Paul’s in 2009 is to raise $41,768 with the participation of 287 households -- a goal that will surely require EVERYONE’s participation and generosity to meet. Last year, 200 households from St. Paul’s raised $41,042 for Episcopal Charities, leading all parishes in our diocese – an example of generosity that truly reveals God’s love in action! Praise God for all who sacrificed and shared to make that happen! You can be pleased with the impact and positive change this enabled across Rhode Island!
We have more to do. We can do it together. With God’s help, we can share from His abundant blessings again. We understand that for some the burden is indeed greater this year. But if you are able, please consider an increase in your pledge. And if you have not contributed to Episcopal Charities before, your support NOW is needed more than ever!
